Mitochondrial and calcium-binding carrier that catalyzes the calcium-dependent exchange of cytoplasmic glutamate with mitochondrial aspartate across the mitochondrial inner membrane. Necessary for gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) uptake in brain mitochondria in response to increased mitochondrial membrane polarization.
