功能：

Plays a role in virion attachment to host B-lymphocytes, through binding to leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II and subsequently participates in fusion of the virion with host membranes. May act as a tropism switch that directs fusion with B-lymphocytes and inhibits fusion with epithelial cells. Additionally, hampers T-cell recognition via HLA class II molecules through steric hindrance of T-cell receptor-class II-peptide interaction.; Soluble gp42 inhibits HLA class II-restricted antigen presentation to T-cells through binding to immature and mature HLA class II complexes.

1. gp42 mutants bound to gH/gL and HLA class II, but not wild-type gp42 or cleavage mutant of gp42; using purified gp42, gH/gL, and HLA, found these proteins associate 1:1:1 suggesting gp42 dimerization or multimerization does not occur or is transient PMID: 21550622
2. reveal distinct functional requirements for gH/gL and gp42 complexes in Epstein-Barr virus-mediated membrane fusion PMID: 16973550
3. This screening demonstrates that LF2 specifically interacts with the central inhibitory association domain of IRF7, and this interaction leads to inhibition of the dimerization of IRF7, which suppresses IFN-alpha production and IFN-mediated immunity. PMID: 18987133
4. Enhanced secretion of gp42 promoted fusion with B lymphocytes, and mutation of the site of gp42 cleavage inhibited membrane fusion activity. PMID: 19369343
